A toolbox, not a highlight reel
Most situations never come down to a punch. They come down to noticing early, saying the hard thing out loud, and knowing how to take the temperature down. This course works in that order — and it doesn't stop before the physical part, either.
-
01
Situational awareness
Reading a room, a street, a stairwell. Learning what your own gut is already telling you, and giving yourself permission to act on it before anything has "officially" happened.
-
02
Boundary-setting
The words, the posture, and the tone that make a limit land — with a stranger, a coworker, or someone you know well. Practiced out loud, because the first time shouldn't be the real time.
-
03
De-escalation
How to bring the heat down when someone else has turned it up, and how to recognize the moment that's past talking so you're not still negotiating when you should be leaving.
-
04
Simple physical techniques
A small number of movements that hold up under adrenaline, in real clothes, against someone bigger than you. Simple on purpose — complicated doesn't survive a real situation.
Taught at a boxing gym, by coaches
If you've been putting this off,
this is the one to come to
You don't need to be fit, coordinated, confident, or interested in boxing. You don't need a reason you're willing to explain. Plenty of people sign up because something happened; plenty sign up because they'd rather not wait until something does. Both are the right reason.
Open to everyone 16 and older. Come alone or bring someone — a friend, a partner, your kid who's old enough.
Nobody gets turned away
If $200 is the thing standing in your way
It shouldn't be. We believe these skills are essential, and a generous sponsor has made sure the price isn't the deciding factor. Email Alex@cappysgym.com and ask — that's the whole process.

Build your toolbox of options to help you feel confident in your skills to keep yourself safe through all of life's challenges.
Cappy's has been teaching people to handle themselves in Seattle's Central District for decades. Resilience Northwest brings the awareness, boundary, and de-escalation curriculum. The gym brings the floor space, the coaches, and a room where practicing this is normal.
Questions people ask
Do I need any experience?
None. No boxing background, no martial arts, no fitness baseline. The course is built for people starting from zero, and the coaches teach it that way.
What if I can't afford $200?
Email Alex@cappysgym.com and say so. Thanks to our sponsor, no one is turned away for financial reasons, and you don't need to justify the request.
Is this only for women?
No. Everyone 16 and up is welcome, whatever your gender.
Do I have to hit anyone, or get hit?
This is a self-defense course, not a fight class. The physical techniques are practiced with coaches and partners at a pace you set. If you have concerns about that, email Alex before you register and he'll walk you through what to expect.
What should I wear or bring?
Clothes you can move in and a water bottle. No gloves, wraps, or gear needed — the gym has what the course uses.
Where exactly is it?
Cappy's new Annex space at 2715 E Union St — a few doors from the main gym. Come to the Annex, not the main entrance.
What if I miss a week?
Come anyway the following week. Each session stands on its own, and the coaches will catch you up on what you missed.
