Cappy’s Boxing Gym was born October 1999, much to the relief of owner, Cappy Kotz. For months he had been hefting two heavy bags and a bunch of miscellaneous equipment up two flights of stairs, setting up and breaking down the gym in a rental space.

The gym started small. There were the two legendary heavy bags, some used equipment and a floor ring. Everyone who stepped through the door and put on gloves wanted more. Cappy’s started to put on some muscle, got more flexible. Classes were added, the Coaching Staff grew, and we moved to a bigger space. We’ve endured hard times, but the focus always stays the same.

When you take a stance and deliver a punch, the message is: I am accountable for my intent, my fears and my desires.

Cappy’s Boxing Gym is noted for many reasons: the music is upbeat and fun, the workouts are challenging, and the rewards are plentiful. But what really makes Cappy’s unique is the Coaching Staff. The gym’s biggest investment is in its Coach Training. Every Coach begins as a boxer at Cappy’s, completes a demanding year-long Coach Training program, becomes certified through USA Boxing, and participates in ongoing bi-weekly Coaches Workouts. The result of this rigorous training is a Coaching Staff equipped to train you to face the matches in your life.

As Cappy’s has matured, so has its Community Connection. We work with local schools and businesses to promote health and well being. Through Community Projects, Cappy’s brings together residents, business owners and visitors to strengthen Central District pride. Everyone who steps inside the gym experiences the benefits of Community Connection.
